I like to talk about radio but I’m not big on talking about shows that get canceled. Many times these shows are favorites of ours in the building. We usually have a good relationship with the talent. But in the end, good relationships and what we like has nothing to do with what we keep on and take off the air. It’s the listener ratings that drive what we keep on and take off.
Walton and Johnson are a perfect example. We target (for KFH) adult men mid 50s and younger. Starting at 9am (M-F) and going through the day, KFH is usually #2 in Wichita, behind KNSS. But in the last ratings book, our KFH morning show was #14. There are around some 20 stations in the metro area. So needless to say that was bad. More men were listening to the soft rock female station during the morning, then coming back to us after 9am!
Many of you that listened to Walton and Johnson wanted to know why they were taken off, so there it is. I heard from many that said 'Walton and Johnson' was the only thing they listened to on KFH. We’ll that tells me a great deal. We try to match up these shows so that our primary audience would tune in day or night, not just for one show. So, maybe W&J just didn’t fit our ‘Guy Talk’ format.
One note: I was surprised by the amount of people that referred to Walton and Johnson as Walter and Johnson.
Our next morning show will start December 14th. It’s Mike and Mike in the Morning. These 2 guys have been doing radio for about a decade now. They sound great together … and are funny.
