It has been 10 years since local personality Bruce Haertl and our radio group put Sports Daily on the air. When Bruce decided to put the show on it was meant as an extension to what he was doing on TV as a sportscaster. Today, the Sports Daily radio program has become a top-rated show in Wichita. There are tons of people tuning in. It’s a great show. The hosts, Bruce and Bob Lutz, make this show more than just another sports talk show. They entertain in a way that is actually very hard to do. Much of it is ‘talent’ you have to be born with. What it comes down to is: are the personalities compelling? Bruce and Bob are. You don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy the program. This coming week, Sports Daily turns 10 years old. Here’s to another 10 …
So LeBron is going to Miami. Man, this guy’s ‘brand’ has risen. There are tons of people out there that now think first of LeBron James before anyone else in the NBA. He’s a big star outside the NBA now. Sure, it would have been nice to stay with the hometown team, but in the end you have to do what makes you happy. I think it was obvious that LeBron was frustrated with Cleveland and never winning. In the end this will make next season one to watch (and listen to on KFH!). The question now, who will win a championship first: Miami with LeBron, or Cleveland? Or maybe it’s just whatever team is coached by Phil Jackson …
Most of us have never played sports on a professional basis. But if you had a chance to, which sport would you like to play, and what position? Oh, and let’s say you are 20 again. I would think many in the US would pick Football, Baseball, or Basketball … maybe even Golf, possible Hockey. Soccer, Tennis … and others being lower. I would like to be a running back in Football. I remember watching Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Tony Dorsett, and others. Taking the ball and doing your best to keep away from the big players that want to run you over. If they catch you, you get hurt … but if they don’t catch you, you do well for the team. Some incentive, eh? Could you imagine how that would translate to the work force? You do a bad job that day you go home with a bruise.
You planning to watch any World Cup Soccer? I may check it out when the US team plays. But what is it about soccer that doesn’t take off in the US? I mean I know the kids love it. But when they become adults, most give it up and become fans of NFL, College Basketball … maybe Baseball.
I’m watching a World Cup game right now on TV. Is the field too big? Is it the fact that scoring hardly ever happens. How frustrating is it when the game is 0 to 0 for half the game? Is it the fact that when one of the players is barely hit, he cries like a baby, sometimes a stretcher is brought out to get him off the field … then I see him back in the game minutes later playing? Is it the idea that these guys are just running around taking shots, trying to get that lucky kick that might go in a goal? After all, there doesn’t seem to be any skill involved. It’s not like I’m trying to throw a football between two defenders to get it in the end field. Or like a baseball pitcher trying to throw a ball that a hitter can’t hit? Maybe there’s just something wrong about not having to use your hands to play the game?
I feel sorry that soccer doesn’t take off here in the US. I wish I could get into it … but for the most part, it’s just boring.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger won’t be facing any criminal charges in association to allegations he forced himself on a 20-year old woman. But I ask, how stupid can you be Ben? You are the face of a major franchise, time to grow up. Hanging out at bars without any control is just plain dumb. I can’t believe Ben, and people like Ben, don’t understand this. Look, if you are a public figure, you have to hold yourself to higher standards. Otherwise you’ll embarrass yourself, and your organization. Who’s next?
I don’t really give recommendations, but I saw a new artist on Jimmy Kimmel the other day. Gin Wigmore. She was a breath of fresh air in a day when record companies can’t seem to sell/produce CD’s like they use to. Gin has a very unique voice that doesn’t really match her look. Google search her and let’s see if she takes off … ?
What’s all this talk about a performance tax on any song played on radio? It’s real. Look here: http://noperformancetax.org/~/media/PDF/… and here: http://noperformancetax.org/~/media/PDF/… … not good. Some in Congress want to impose a tax on radio stations all across the country for each song played on a station. Radio stations already pay a fee to rights-holders of music. Some of these rights-holders are the artists, maybe the writers, and even record companies. But record companies are losing money, and they want to shift their problems to radio stations. Some artists are complaining that they should get more money from radio stations. But they make tons of money when they do a concert in a local community, not the radio station. And how do most people hear about their concert? On the radio! These artists would be no-one if it wasn’t for radio. You can do something: http://noperformancetax.org/en/Take%20Ac…
Tons of things happening here at KFH: Our new morning and afternoon shows continue to grow in popularity. The more listeners check out these shows, the more they understand the chemistry. As usual, Jim Rome and Bruce and Bob are still very strong with Men. We’re always #1 or #2 in that area.
I do find it interesting that I still get emails from non-listeners that complain about some of our shows without even listening to them for more than a few minutes. How do you know what a show is like unless you take the time to listen and understand it? Of course, if you are not in our demo, then you may not like us. Try the soft rock station down the FM dial.
Adding ESPN to the overnights and weekends has helped us keep listeners informed on the latest in sports. It’s nice to have live programming during these times. It’s also nice to be the radio voice of The NFL, and KU Sports. We’ve seen tons of people tune-in Sundays to check out games this past NFL season.
Have you checked out our FM2 channel at KFH HD2? Man, it’s good. We’ve got some of the best in rock playing there. Might look into getting an HD Radio … or at the least when you purchase a new radio, make sure it has the HD Radio logo on it.
Superbowl is this weekend. Right off I’ll predict that Indy will win over the Saints. Indy is just too strong of a team. And remember, they would be undefeated if they choose so. Look, I’m not a big fan of either of these teams, and yes it would be nice to see N.O. get their first win … but I just don’t see it.
I heard Mike and Mike, on KFH mornings, the other day talk about the thought of moving the Superbowl to Saturdays instead of Sundays. I’d rather not see that. It just feels good to be on Sundays. We make it a family event at home.
Hey keep in mind that if you need to make a run for chips and dip, keep your radio on KFH this weekend as we will have all the Superbowl action, including the game!
What’s going on at NBC? I never could understand why they pushed Leno out for Conan when Leno’s contract ended last year. After all, Leno was #1 in his time slot, and Conan was #1 in his. Why mess with that? I think someone’s ego got in the way. And I’m not talking about Leno or Conan. Someone in the management office made this mistake.
I’m not a big fan of Leno. I do like Conan. I have watched some of Conan in his old late show, but I have not watched a full Tonight Show since Carson left.
I got a kick the other day from watching Jimmy Kimmel doing Leno. That was pretty funny.
